The first item is topical: The MHRA has produced a series of new advice on the use of over the counter (OTC) medication for children under 6. Professional Responsibility
We are excited. Why? We are excited about what is happening in Lambert and we are excited about the direction our profession is moving. A variety of debates are happening at the very top about a range of issues on where our profession should be heading and the structures which will get us there. A lot of us may find it difficult to tune in to some of these discussions because of pressures of work etc. Be rest assured, there are people working tirelessly to deliver the pharmacy we all deserve. Maybe you should consider using the PJ Online more often and consider registering for alerts on the website ( Click here ).One document that caught our attention recently is the professional guide which sets out our responsibilities ( link ). The 52-page document is a clear way of demonstrating leadership from the top. This document interfaces with all existing documents such as RPSGB Code of Ethics and Fitness to Practice whilst maintaining a pivotal and central role.
The five key roles of the pharmacist was identified as:
- to use pharmacy and integrate pharmacy into healthcare systems to improve outcomes, increase safety and effectiveness
- to monitor, modify and implement therapeutic approaches, such as dispensing medicines and supplying over-the-counter medicines
- to ensure safe pharmacy systems and services
- to deliver patient-centred care
- to maintain and improve professional performance
As you may be aware by now, we don’t like big documents! And a 52-page document is a lot to get through. We are working to produce a condensed version of the document which will be relevant to our locum pharmacists.

Jaggy wrote an article entitled ‘Update on CDs’ on the MUROnline website on 21/02/2009 ( link ). He raised and re-enforced some valuable points around Controlled Drugs. The area we are concerned with here relates to knowing your Accountable Officer.
Who is the Accountable Officer?
According to the healthcare commission, an accountable officer is responsible for making sure that their organisation handles controlled drugs safely and complies with the relevant legislation.
